On May 28, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell met with European External Action Service Secretary General Stefano Sannino in Brussels. Deputy Secretary Campbell and Secretary General Sannino discussed the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as part of a hostage deal and the urgency of humanitarian assistance reaching civilians in need. They discussed the challenges posed by the People’s Republic of China, including its support for Russia’s defense-industrial base. They reiterated staunch U.S. and EU support for Ukraine amid Russia’s war of aggression and discussed the use of extraordinary revenues from immobilized Russian sovereign assets for the benefit of Ukraine. They also discussed cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners and working together on countering disinformation in the Global South.
