Department of State Announces Award to Kieran Timberlake for Design of New U.S. Diplomatic Missions in Brussels
The Department of State announces the selection of Kieran Timberlake of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to design the new buildings for the U.S. Embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium and U.S. Mission to the European Union. This project will serve as the architectural foundation for these two U.S. government diplomatic missions. The new facilities will strengthen collaboration and enhance efficiency in diplomatic efforts on a bilateral basis between the United States, Belgium and the 27 member countries of the European Union.
Strategically situated within walking distance of Belgian government ministries, the EU institutions, other foreign missions, two major parks, embassy housing, and public transportation, the selected site offers unparalleled accessibility and convenience. The project will strive to regreen the site by aligning with the U.S., Belgian, and the EU’s global CO2 reduction strategies and initiatives through its design and construction practices. The new diplomatic facilities will provide a secure, modern, sustainable, and resilient platform for U.S. diplomacy in Belgium and throughout Europe.
Since the start of the Department’s Capital Security Construction Program in 1999, OBO has completed 177 new diplomatic facilities. OBO currently has more than 50 active projects either in the design phase or under construction worldwide.
OBO provides safe, secure, functional, and resilient facilities that represent the U.S. government to the host nation and that support U.S. diplomats in advancing U.S. foreign policy objectives abroad.
