Department of State Celebrates Groundbreaking of New U.S. Embassy in Port Louis, Mauritius

As a demonstration of the enduring commitment to strengthening the relationship between the United States, Mauritius and the region, Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma and U.S. Ambassador to Mauritius Henry Jardine, with representatives from the U.S. Mission in Mauritius, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO), and other U.S. and Mauritian officials celebrated the groundbreaking of the new U.S. Embassy in Port Louis on May 30.

The embassy design thoughtfully incorporates the island’s rich history and natural beauty, establishing meaningful connections with its surroundings. It incorporates cutting-edge energy-saving and sustainability strategies that curtail environmental impact, maximize building performance, and bolster self-sufficiency. The embassy is poised to serve as a critical focal point in U.S.-Mauritian relations and a symbol of our shared commitment to human rights, sustainable economic growth, and global cooperation.

Richärd Kennedy Architects of Phoenix, Arizona, is the design architect and B.L. Harbert International of Birmingham, Alabama, is the design-build contractor with Page of Washington, D.C., as the architect and engineer of record.

Since the start of the Department’s Capital Security Construction Program in 1999, OBO has completed 176 new diplomatic facilities. OBO currently has more than 50 active projects either in the design phase or under construction worldwide.

OBO provides safe, secure, functional, and resilient facilities that represent the U.S. government to the host nation and that support U.S. diplomats in advancing U.S. foreign policy objectives abroad.
