Ukraine’s children are being deprived of safe education: together we can change the situation, – Viktoriia Korsunova

Despite the daily shelling, Ukraine is trying to organize a safe educational process for its children and restore the potential of its educational infrastructure.

In particular, the first underground school in Ukraine has recently been completed in Kharkiv. In 2024, about 600 children will be able to start studying there.

Kharkiv is one of the regional centers most affected by Russian aggression. Since September 1, 2023, classrooms have been set up for schoolchildren at metro stations, and the construction of underground schools in other parts of the city is currently underway.

At the same time, the construction and reconstruction of school shelters continues across the country. However, a significant number of children are forced to study remotely.

“According to Ukrainian officials, almost one in seven schools in Ukraine has been damaged. Almost 400 educational institutions have been completely destroyed. Ukrainian schools are always under threat of attack. Thus, for the third year in a row, Russia has been depriving Ukrainian children of safe access to educational services,” emphasized Victoriia Korsunova, head of the URF Kyiv office.

More than five hundred educational institutions have been restored during the war at the expense of both the budget and philanthropists. In total, the World Bank estimates that $14 billion is needed to rebuild Ukraine’s educational infrastructure.

For Ukraine, this is an unbearable figure, but together we can do more.
