Signing of the U.S.-Japan Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Memorandum of Understanding

Acting Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs Jennifer Littlejohn and Takayuki Fujiyoshi Deputy Director General for the Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy at the Japan Cabinet Office have signed a Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two countries announced during the official visit of Prime Minister Kishida of Japan on April 10. Acting Assistant Secretary Littlejohn and Deputy Director General Fujiyoshi shared their commitment to deepen connectivity between U.S.-Japan science and technology entrepreneurs, expand investment opportunities, and foster technological innovation. The U.S.-Japan GIST MOU will catalyze innovation, facilitate knowledge exchange, and promote entrepreneurial endeavors that contribute to the advancement of science, technology, and societal well-being.

This MOU, signed on March 26, 2024, builds on an expansive history of scientific and diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Japan. The U.S.-Japan GIST MOU paves the way for science and technology innovation initiatives that connect American technology companies with Japanese entrepreneurs. Japan intends to fully fund Japanese participants and expanded GIST operational costs for Japan-specific programs, and the United States intends to provide technical expertise and to facilitate visa processing, as appropriate.
