Portugal National Day – United States Department of State
On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Portugal on the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.
This year’s Portugal Day holds special significance as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution and how ordinary people inspired the world by standing up against autocracy to forge a vibrant democracy through their courage and determination.
The United States’ unique and enduring ties with Portugal date back to Portugal’s early recognition of the United States. The Founding Fathers even toasted the signing of our Declaration of Independence with Madeira wine. Our diplomatic, economic, and cultural bonds have deepened with each year since then.
The United States and Portugal share a common border in the Atlantic and have been friends since the founding of our republic. As founding members of NATO, this year we celebrate 75 years of the Alliance together. We also value Portugal’s leadership in the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation, bolstering an Atlantic community to support sustainable economic development and environmental protection. Through these engagements and beyond, Portugal remains a trusted partner and ally to address challenges and identify solutions on the global stage and with the global majority.
The United States celebrates these special aspects of our relationship with the people of Portugal today and looks forward to a continuing flourishing of our relationship into the future.
