Guatemala’s National Day – United States Department of State

On behalf of the United States of America, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of Guatemala on this 203rd anniversary of Guatemala’s National Day.

The past year has been historic for Guatemala: Bernardo Arévalo took office as president in January after the country’s free and fair elections, and Guatemala showcased its regional leadership on pressing issues such as migration management, security, and inclusive economic development.

President Arévalo and Vice President Karin Herrera’s leadership has opened new avenues for collaboration between our two countries. Despite facing significant challenges from corrupt forces, President Arévalo has remained committed to demonstrating that democracy can deliver tangible benefits to the Guatemalan people. We support your efforts to combat corruption, to foster democracy, and to build a more peaceful future.

As President Biden often reminds us, “Democracy doesn’t happen by accident. We have to defend it, fight for it, strengthen it, renew it.” Safeguarding our democracies is a collective effort, one that depends on our institutions and our people working together. Today, and every day, the United States stands strong behind the will of the Guatemalan people and pledges to support their pursuit of a representative democracy.

I wish the Government of Guatemala and the Guatemalan people a joyous National Day. May you take pride in the many achievements of your diverse and rich society. The United States looks forward to continuing our partnership and building on these accomplishments together.
