Pavlo Kostyuk honored the memory of the Holodomor victims in New York
on November 18, 2023, in New York City, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, priests of various denominations held a prayer service for the victims of the Holodomor.
This year’s memorial service was held by Archbishop-Metropolitan Anthony of the UOC of the USA, Archbishop Daniel of the UOC of the USA, and Archbishop-Metropolitan Borys Gudziak of the UGCC of Philadelphia. Also present was the Cardinal of the Catholic Church, Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of New York.
The event was attended by U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Oksana Markarova, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Sergiy Kyslytsya, Chairman of the Ukrainian Reconstruction Fund Pavlo Kostyuk, President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America Andriy Futey, and two Holodomor survivors, Yuri Bazilevsky and Nadia Severin.
– The event was particularly moving. The cathedral was filled to capacity with people, and not just Ukrainians. They came from different states to pray together and honor the memory of millions of Ukrainians who died as a result of the artificial famine planned and implemented by the Stalinist regime, – said Ambassador Oksana Markarova.
A 30-meter-long flag of Ukraine was brought into the hall to the accompaniment of the national anthem of Ukraine “God is Great and One” performed by the Dumka choir.
– The tragic events of the 30s of the last century are not only our national memory, but also our unquenchable pain. Unfortunately, the executioners of the Ukrainian people have not been held accountable, so today their grandchildren and great-grandchildren continue their terrible attempts to destroy our nation, – said Pavlo Kostyuk.
In his turn, Sergiy Kyslytsya said that 45 countries have already joined the Declaration initiated by the Ukrainian delegation to the UN on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine.
