Stadtwerke Kiel and INNIO Set Global Standards for Climate Neutral Energy Supply by 2035

Stadtwerke Kiel and INNIO Set Global Standards for Climate Neutral Energy Supply by 2035• Stadtwerke Kiel and INNIO plan to achieve climate neutrality at the coastal power plant in Kiel by 2035.
• As the world’s first 190 MW large-scale engine-based combined heat and power plant, the coastal power plant is planned to be converted to hydrogen operations.
• 20 Jenbacher engines are to be converted to run on green hydrogen.

Stadtwerke Kiel and INNIO are working on the conversion of the coastal power plant in Kiel that will allow the facility to operate on 100% green hydrogen (H2) by 2035, ten years ahead of the German government’s climate targets. With this, Europe’s most advanced large-scale engine-based combined heat and power plant is setting new global standards for climate-neutral energy supply. An important requirement for keeping to the ambitious schedule is that sufficient green hydrogen is available in time and on economic terms. Today, both companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the project.

“We need flexible backup power plants so that Kiel and Germany can be securely supplied with power – especially when the wind does not blow and the sun does not shine. There is no getting around this basic law of physics,” asserts Dr. Jörg Teupen, Board Member for Technology and Personnel at Stadtwerke Kiel AG. “In order to achieve climate neutrality for this type of power plant operation, hydrogen must be readily available to us. However, this is dependent on Europe having an abundance of hydrogen available over the coming years,” continues Teupen.

The two companies’ joint ambition is founded upon the “Eight-Point Program: Route to Climate Neutrality” established by Stadtwerke Kiel AG, the energy supplier pushing ahead with the energy transition with this program. With the original aim to be fully climate neutral in the generation of power and district heating by 2040 at the latest, the energy supplier has now brought this date forward by five years to 2035 based on its hydrogen project.

“We are setting new global standards in collaboration with Stadtwerke Kiel. The coastal power plant in Kiel is the first of its kind globally whose technology could theoretically be converted to green hydrogen today. Nevertheless, for the conversion to happen no later than 2035, policymakers need to put the correct framework in place right now,” says Dr. Olaf Berlien, president and CEO of INNIO.

The Stadtwerke Kiel coastal power plant supplies more than 73,500 homes with eco-friendly district heating and also generates electricity for the region. In doing so, the highly flexible large-scale engine-based combined heat and power plant ensures there is a secure and environmentally friendly supply of energy. INNIO’s Jenbacher engines are the first hydrogen engines at megawatt scale. The company, based in Tyrol, Austria, is among the first to be able to convert the majority of its installed engines to run on green hydrogen. The conversion of Jenbacher engines from natural gas to green hydrogen will result in the advanced, flexible coastal power plant becoming entirely climate neutral by 2035.

BLUETTI’s Spring Sale Will Allow Customers to Have Incredible Spring Outdoor Adventures

BLUETTI’s Spring Sale Will Allow Customers to Have Incredible Spring Outdoor Adventures

Starting March 7, BLUETTI, the leading brand in clean energy storage, is offering a bundle of savings on power stations, solar panels and kits for people to explore nature.

Home Backup Before Hitting The Road
“Spring is the time to get out and enjoy outdoors. Everything is ready to go until your puppy starts pulling at your legs, and then you start worrying about potential power outages. However, if you have a backup power system at home, like the BLUETTI EP series, AC500 or AC300, you can just head out and check on the power system via the BLUETTI APP now and then, saving you a lot of worries,” said Alan Brown, BLUETTI’s brand ambassador in his video about spring outings.

BLUETTI’s AC300&B300 and AC500&B300S combos are powerful and capacity-expanding. The AC300 comes with a 3000W inverter and supports four B300 LFP batteries for a maximum capacity of 12288Wh. While the AC500 is even more robust to deliver 5000W power and has a massive 18.4kWh storage with six B300S modules.

With their large capacity and efficient UPS function, AC300 and AC500 power systems can give travelers peace of mind when away for several days. Once power outages occur, they can detect and switch over in 20ms to keep the house running. So there’s no need to rush home to check whether the refrigerator, fish tank and security cameras have power.

Mobile Solar Power for Longer Playtime
One of BLUETTI’s goals is to provide enough power people need in the wild. The EB3A and EB70S portable solar generators can certainly live up to expectations. They are both handy and powerful enough: EB3A can supply 600W from its 268Wh LFP battery to 9 different devices, while EB70S for 800W, 716Wh. If the above two starter solar generators don’t fulfill the increasing needs, meet the AC200Max and AC200P. They perfectly balance capacity and mobility. Besides their integrated 2000Wh battery, they can connect with B230 or B300 expansion battery for a larger capacity. The 2000W power output is also sufficient for most common devices.

Even if the solar generators are depleted, they can be quickly replenished by fast solar charging via BLUETTI portable solar panels. All BLUETTI panels, including PV120, PV200, PV350, use monocrystalline cells with up to 23.4% efficiency. Covered with ETFE material and equipped with an IP65 junction box, they can withstand all scratches and splashes. There is always plenty of power on the go when generators are paired with solar panels.

Freedom Libraries to Open in Maine Prisons

Freedom Libraries to Open in Maine PrisonsFreedom Libraries conceived by former prisoner-turned-acclaimed-poet open at Maine Correctional Center and Maine Correctional Women’s Center.

Today the national nonprofit Freedom Reads opened six Freedom Libraries at Maine Correctional Center (MCC), one library at Southern Maine Women’s Reentry Center (SMWRC) and one library at Maine Correctional Women’s Center (MCWC) in Windham, ME. The Freedom Libraries will be placed in the facilities’ housing units for unfettered access to the 500-book collection. One of MCC’s six Freedom Libraries will be dedicated to staff use. The Maine Department of Corrections was one of the first to welcome partnering with Freedom Reads. MCC opened their first three Freedom Libraries on Nov. 8, 2022.

The brainchild of 2021 MacArthur Fellow and Yale Law School graduate Reginald Dwayne Betts who was sentenced to nine years in prison at age 16, the Freedom Libraries seek to create a space in prisons to encourage community and where reaching for a book can be as spontaneous as human curiosity. Each bookshelf is handcrafted out of maple, walnut or cherry and is curved to contrast the straight lines and bars of prisons as well as to evoke Martin Luther King Jr.’s line about the “arc of the universe” bending “toward justice.” The libraries were made with the help of Emerge Connecticut, a reentry organization that works with formerly incarcerated individuals in New Haven.

Betts’ nonprofit is a first-of-its-kind organization that empowers people through literature to imagine new possibilities for their lives. Books in the Freedom Library have been carefully curated through consultations with hundreds of poets, novelists, philosophers, teachers, friends, and voracious readers, resulting in a collection of books that are not only beloved, but indispensable. The libraries include contemporary poets, novelists, and essayists alongside classic works from Homer’s The Odyssey to the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, titles that remind us the book has long been a freedom project.

“We are grateful that the Maine Department of Corrections continues to see the value of Freedom Reads as we help individuals to understand the value that a book can hold in shaping a life,” said Reginald Dwayne Betts, Founder and CEO of Freedom Reads. “The opening of these new Freedom Libraries at Maine Correctional Center, Maine Correctional Women’s Center, and Southern Maine Women’s Reentry Center will foster an environment where these men and women can envision their future beyond the cold bars and prison walls, in addition to opening themselves up to a sense of imagination, community, and inquiry.”

“The spirit and empowerment found in books can change lives,” says Anthony Cantillo, Deputy Commissioner of the Maine Department of Corrections. “The craftsmanship of the handmade bookshelves and the diverse selection of books will inspire residents and staff of the Maine Department of Corrections. Everyone has a story to tell; Freedom Reads reminds us of that.”

About Freedom Reads:

Founded by Reginald Dwayne Betts, who knows firsthand the dispiriting forces of prison, Freedom Reads works to empower people through literature to confront what prison does to the spirit. Supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and inspired by the recognition that freedom begins with a book, Freedom Reads supports the efforts of people in prison to transform their lives through increased access to books and writers. EcoClear Products Reports Its Pest Control Supplies are Unaffected, Following EPA Proposal Release

EcoClear Products Reports Its Pest Control Supplies are Unaffected, Following EPA Proposal ReleaseThe company’s pest control solutions, like RatX®, MouseX®, VoleX®, and MoleX® are formulated to only affect target species.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently found that several common pesticide ingredients pose a risk to humans, animals and the environment, and proposed new regulations that would impose restrictions on their use. EcoClear Products, maker of minimum-risk pesticides and cleansers, has reviewed the EPA action and announces that its pest control solutions, like RatX®, MouseX®, VoleX®, and MoleX®, do not include the targeted FGAR and SGAR ingredients.

“Our pest control products are formulated with FDA GRAS ingredients and are safe to use around non-target animals when used as directed,” said Christopher Stidd, founder and CEO of EcoClear Products. “EcoClear Products has long been an industry leader in effective, poison-free pest control, and we continue to aim to educate industry leaders and various sectors through our extensive knowledge and research.”

Under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), EPA must review registered pesticides every 15 years, Stidd explained. The law ensures that as products and practices change, and as science develops a better ability to assess health risks, pesticides continue to meet the standard of causing no adverse effects on human health or the environment.

The most recent evaluation ruled that several common chemicals in pesticides are harming non-target animals and posing a risk to both humans and the environment. When the EPA identifies unreasonable adverse effects, it proposes amendments to pesticide labels to mitigate these risks.

The new EPA proposal suggests new measures be taken for 11 rodenticides currently on the market. Pesticide companies that use these chemicals would be required to remove them from their products, or, in some instances, a designated person from a pest control company would need to observe the area where the pesticide was used for a specific timeframe and report what animals died as a result.

EcoClear Products uses patented and proprietary compounds and processes, and its chemists continue to expand the company’s green cleaning, odor-neutralizing, and minimum-risk pesticide products, Stidd said, reiterating that its pesticide offerings contain none of the ingredients the EPA has found to merit new protective measures.

Rodenticides are necessary because rodents cause significant damage to property, crops and food supplies across the country. They may also spread diseases, posing a serious risk to public health. Rodenticides are used in residential, agricultural and non-agricultural settings to control a variety of pests, including house mice, moles, ground squirrels and mongooses.

EcoClear Products is dedicated to researching, developing and perfecting non-poisonous pest management solutions available for home and business owners across the United States. To learn more about EcoClear Products, visit www.ecoclearproducts.com/pro.
