The US and Ukraine are working to modernize the country’s energy sector
UKRAINE AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ARE WORKING ON A ROADMAP FOR OUR COUNTRY’S POST-WAR ENERGY SYSTEM. IT WILL INCLUDE SAFE NUCLEAR ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES AND RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES.
This was reported by U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm in an interview with Reuters on July 24.
“Ukrainians are under constant threat. So we have to help them get through this period of time, strengthen their existing assets,” Granholm said.
She added that together with the Ukrainian authorities, the United States is developing a plan for what the Ukrainian energy system will look like after the war.
“These may be micro-reactors. It could be small modular reactors (SMRs). It will definitely be distributed solar and wind generation combined with batteries,” she said.
Granholm noted that new nuclear capacity could become part of the future energy system if it is designed in a safe way.
By the way, Germany will contribute EUR 50 million to the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine. This will bring the total amount of the country’s contribution to the fund to more than €275 million.
It was also reported that the European Investment Bank (EIB) will provide Ukraine with loans worth €560 million this year for projects in the energy sector, transport infrastructure and housing rehabilitation.
