United States and Peru Convene for Annual Dialogue of the Child Protection Compact Partnership
United States and Peruvian government officials, accompanied by civil society and international organization implementing partners, will convene for the fourth Child Protection Compact (CPC) Annual Dialogue on November 29, 2023. Bryan Marcus, Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of State’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, Political Counselor Justin Davis of the U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peruvian Vice Minister of Public Security at the Ministry of Interior Héctor Loayza Arrieta, and Dr. Aissa Tejada, General Director of Democratic Security, Ministry of Interior will be the senior government representatives participating in the dialogue.
The U.S.-Peru CPC Partnership aims to strengthen the Peruvian government’s efforts to effectively investigate, prosecute, and convict child traffickers; identify and provide comprehensive trauma-informed care for children who experienced these crimes; and prevent child trafficking in all its forms.
During the dialogue, government officials and civil society partners will present accomplishments and challenges over the past year toward achieving the mutually agreed partnership goals. This dialogue builds on a co-creation workshop among the same entities in October.
Since 2017, the U.S. government has invested over $10 million in foreign assistance toward projects implemented by civil society and international organizations that fulfill the goals of the partnership. The Government of Peru has established six specialized child trafficking shelters and increased the number of specialized prosecutors’ offices to address trafficking in persons as part of their commitment under the partnership. Regional governments in Loreto and Cusco approved public investment projects to expand child trafficking prevention efforts and strengthen victim assistance and reintegration services in their respective regions.
