Former Romanian MP Florin Popescu was sentenced to two years in prison no parole. Popescu resigned from the Chamber of Deputies at the beginning of March.
He has been tried for corruption after he had asked a local investor to donate over 60 tons of grill chicken, which he distributed to poor people in his county as electoral bribe. The High Court’s decision in this case is final.
In 2012, Florin Popescu used his position as president of the Democrat Liberal Party (PDL) in Dambovita county to determine Rami Ghaziri, the owner of Avicola Crevedia, give him over 60 tons of grill chicken worth over EUR 100,000.
Popescu then distributed the chicken to people in the Dambovita county during the local elections campaign in June 2012. At that time, he ran for a new term as president of the Dambovita County Council.
Ghaziri denounced the former MP to the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA).
